Which writer (born on this day, as it happens) wrote this?
'The best prayers have often more groans than words.'
He also wrote this:
'The robe of flesh wears thin, and with the years God shines through all things.'
You might well be surprised by the answer...

Nige, so easy... It was you. You've just typed it.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, by the way.
You have to forbid the use of Google
ReplyDeleteJohn Donne?
ReplyDeleteSt. Augustine?
Surprised? Was it Rochester? See, we're all guessing poet. Evelyn Waugh?
ReplyDeletei would have said Donne but you said we may be surprised, so i'm going to try Chesterton, who i can't imagine writing either of these two...
ReplyDeleteSamuel Johnson? Something about groans. I don't think he was afraid to admit to groaning. He probably groaned along with Hodge in a fine duet that shook the tiles on houses all around and found it good for the digestion. Maybe we don't groan enough these days. But not a clue really.
ReplyDeleteGive up?
ReplyDeleteHilaire Belloc?
ReplyDeleteNo's all round so far - no one even close. As I say, it's surprising...
ReplyDeleteIt must be someone contemporary then. The pope?
ReplyDeleteNot contemporary, but 20th century...
ReplyDeleteOK, one last groan: Beckett? Joyce?
ReplyDeleteOkay then - here's the answer:
ReplyDeleteJohn Buchan!
How do you like that?
Clearly we're speechless...
ReplyDeleteGroan ...
