Those who take the ruthlessly scientific approach to life always forget that scientific research is predicated on the presence of a human and humans come with common sense and intuition pre-installed even before they start "finding" things. I think, in a sense, this is what Michale Gove meant when he made his famous and much reviled comment about "experts" (why does everything have to be put between quotation marks these days?).
