There is a place for both in the world, but not every book we might want to read is available for free online, and even if we can find what we want for sale online, not all of us have the money to buy it.

When I learn of some book I'd like to read, first I check the local libraries (online!), and then if it isn't there, PaperBackSwap.com, or BookMooch.com. Once in a while they surprise me with offerings other than popular reads. I am grateful to be able to check all this online, but I would hate to see brick and stone libraries disappear.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2526736757651414061.post-45873734523212122262011-10-29T19:13:37.789+01:002011-10-29T19:13:37.789+01:00Really worthwhile data, much thanks for the post.Really worthwhile data, much thanks for the post.www.natalia.bizhttp://www.natalia.biznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2526736757651414061.post-54885415170677701022011-02-01T17:37:23.012+00:002011-02-01T17:37:23.012+00:00Replacing the library with the Internet is like re...Replacing the library with the Internet is like replacing Thanksgiving Dinner with Burger King Drive-Thru.Shelleyhttp://dustbowlpoetry.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2526736757651414061.post-35588180849409233012011-01-31T13:59:42.049+00:002011-01-31T13:59:42.049+00:00I guess what they really meant - but didn't da...I guess what they really meant - but didn't dare to say - was Smaller State. Nigeness, Anecdotal Evidence, the Dabbler's 1p Reviews etc, so I see no grounds at all for pessimism on that front. And recommendations are not limited by what happens to be on the shelves - the whole of literature is available.

As to the Big Society - yes, a good idea which didn't really need to be 'marketed' as an idea - just something the Govt should quietly get on with, ie. dismantling itself.Brithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00390560583798960760noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2526736757651414061.post-4708191172045420632011-01-30T21:07:43.746+00:002011-01-30T21:07:43.746+00:00Me neither Mark, tho I suspect there just might be...Me neither Mark, tho I suspect there just might be something in it somewhere - so far it's v badly expressed and not thought through...Nigehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13314891387515045404noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2526736757651414061.post-66575323742240655992011-01-30T20:56:39.810+00:002011-01-30T20:56:39.810+00:00The Friends of XX Library has already been formed ...The Friends of XX Library has already been formed here, after the Council announced that funding for it would cease. What's particularly annoying is that the library has a garden which is much used in the summer by the elderly and disabled since there are many flats in the area with no access to greenery. I know that libraries are about books but I don't really buy that line today. They've become social centres too, for better or worse. It's hard to feel all that optimistic, since it might be hard for councils to resist offers of cash from developers for more bankers' flats and Tesco stores. As for the 'Big Society', well any alternative vision had better be based on more than "life is all about shopping" or it will deserve to fail, imho. Have you met anyone who believes the "Big Society" is the next hot ticket? I haven't met a single person yet.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06074816573442173758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2526736757651414061.post-87780578682715462382011-01-30T17:47:37.851+00:002011-01-30T17:47:37.851+00:00Absolutely Peter - and similar things happened in ...Absolutely Peter - and similar things happened in the East End of London with its large immigrant population and superb public libraries.
