PS

Here's something I wrote about J.L. Carr for the excellent Engelsberg Ideas. Follow the link...

  1. I enjoyed your article in Engelsberg Ideas on butterflies but wanted to direct you to a fifteenth century (I think) painting of a butterfly in Hereford Cathedral - intended I believe as a symbol of the soul, so not idle of frivolous. You probably know of it; if not do ask for directions - philipweaver@live.co.uk

    1. Thanks, Philip – I didn't know about that. Is it on one of the manuscripts in the chained library? Do you have an image or a link?

    2. I can't find a photo sadly. It's a generic butterfly and could easily be a dragon fly! I find it's early 16thC, pre Reformation. It's a panel on the screen of the beautiful Audley Chapel (end of the Lady chapel at Hereford Cathedral on the right, south.) Hereford is not that far from Lichfield - I expect you'll visit one day!

    3. Thanks, Philip – I must pay a visit. It's been many years since I was last there.
