And Timothy Dexter

Before the day is over, I guess we should commemorate this fellow, who died on this date in 1806. There's really nothing to add to the extraordinary story outined here, except perhaps a few !s

  1. Lordy, what a great story! You couldn't make it up... I love the bit about coals to Newcastle, and the page of punctuation marks...

  2. "This article or section has multiple issues." English is doomed.

  3. hahaha! what a lovely start to the morning to read such a truly excellent story - my favourite bit-

"He started telling visitors that his wife had died, despite the fact that she was still very much alive, and that the "drunken nagging woman" who frequented the building was simply her ghost."

  4. The whole page is a delight. A great story and I also enjoyed at the top:

'For the bear enthusiast, see Timothy Treadwell.'

On clicking through I learnt that this particular bear enthusiast (born Timothy Dexter) was 'killed and partially devoured by one, possibly two, grizzly bears'. That's what I call enthusiasm.

  5. Yes, too many highlights. I'd love to hear more of his resident 'poet laureate'... and what a title for your memoirs: A Pickle for the Knowing Ones.

  6. "eccentric businessman who was peculiarly lucky and never bothered to learn to spell."
Sounds like my kind of person.
