On This Day...

many eminent men and women were born, from Leonardo to Henry James, by way of Bessie Smith, green baize maestro Joe Davis, Fernando Pessa (not the enigmatic Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa, but a prominent journalist and broadcaster who, for a few months before his death in 2002 at the age of 100, was the world's oldest living journalist). Also worth a mention are the painter Arshile Gorky and the 'Great Leader' Kim Il Sung. However, one man - 71 today - towers over all these pygmies. The man whose inimitable blog continues to delight and enthral the nation... I'm sure you'll all want to join me in wishing him many happy returns of the day.

  1. Thanks Nige, had all but forgotten the worlds greatest writer since Ernie Wise and the warmest, kindest most intelligent human being since Ted Baxter, also Englands greatest porkie teller.

  2. Ah yes - Ted Baxter! I'd forgotten him - thanks Malty - and what a great show the Mary Tyler Moore Show was...

Its my birthday too and now you've ruined it for what few are likely left to me Nige. Thanks mate.

Did I really not know this? Or had I perhaps tried to blank it out?

Oh and don't forget the fragrant Emma Thompson who shares the very day with me. 52 today and looking a lot better on it than I am.

  4. Although I'm with you Nige on the barely concealed loathing for the little squirt, I'm unable to quite banish my admiration for his unabashed self-confidence that, if anything, seems to grow with the passing years

  5. 1,480,332 hits in March did birthday boy Archer have, but only a dozen or so left Comments. By that reckoning, Nige had...lots & lots more hits. Nige wins.

Did you know that to post a Comment on Sarah Palin's Facebook page, you have to hit LIKE? And, if it's anti-Palin in the slightest, it's deleted within minutes? I've monitored it. I have far too much spare time.
