Lol. The Onion is wonderful. We have nothing like it in the UK. Compare this with the vulgar end-of-pier rubbish which passes for comedy or satire over here. Say, TV shows like Little Britain USA or Paul Merton in India which grossly insult everyone in the host country while showing ourselves in the crassest light. I suppose our most talented satirists work in other fields. Step forward Jeremy Clarkson and Andrew Neil, perhaps. The eccentric Heston Blumenthal shows promise, too.
One of our greatest comedy acts, now sadly no longer with us, graced our television screen last night, the wonderfull Barbara, complete with eyelashes the size of Condors. Magic, riveting, if only we had more like her. Viva Cartland the Pink. Two books per month, man that's Homeric.
Nige, who, like Mr Kenneth Horne, prefers to remain anonymous, was also a founder blogger of The Dabbler and a co-blogger on the Bryan Appleyard Thought Experiments blog. He is the sole blogger on this one, and his principal aim is to share various of life's pleasures. These tend to relate to books, art, poems, butterflies, birds, churches, music, walking, weather, drink, etc, with occasional references to the passing scene. His book, The Mother of Beauty: On the Golden Age of English Church Monuments, and Other Matters of Life and Death, is available on Amazon or direct from the author.

ReplyDeleteWell there's always Chris Morris - but otherwise, yes, 'satire' here is dire, mostly smug mutual grooming.
ReplyDeleteYes, Morris apart, British satire is also uniformly left wing. Whereas The Onion, South Park etc have a go at absolutely everything.
