Cameron: Looking at Fish
Hats off to David Cameron? Well, kind of, provisionally, maybe lifted an inch or two from the pate... I find myself quite impressed by how, in the face of what the BBC describes as 'huge pressure' and amid much outcry in the media and among his fellow politicians (and even the resignation of the Tories' token Muslim Woman), Cameron has so far not joined in the hand-wringing, moral grandstanding and wholesale condemnation of Israel over what is going on in Gaza. No, rather than cave in to that 'huge pressure', he employs himself (so far anyway) doing what he loves to do - looking at fish in a fish market. He was doing it last year, he's doing it this year, he clearly intends to go on doing it every time he find himself anywhere near a fish market. Good for him! To paraphrase Dr Johnson, a man is seldom more innocently employed than when he is looking at fish. Especially a politician...

Can't agree on this Nige. 2000 - 60 seems a dreadful score for a football match. Perhaps Israel, on hearing of the murder of the three boys which kicked all of this off should have 'turned the other cheek' with grieving dignity intend of opting for this eye for an eye style smiting of the Palestinians. I believe that would be the 'Christian' response. I'm in Berlin. 200 yards away Palestinians are protesting with child-sized mock coffins on the street and three armed policemen guard a Jewish bookshop opposite the hotel. I think Cameron should say something.
ReplyDeleteAs evidenced by photos from his 2013 and 2014 holidays, and as befits the leader of a great nation, Cameron has mastered the extraordinarily difficult skill of simultaneously looking AND pointing at fish while wearing a blue shirt.
ReplyDeleteYes - he seems to have improved on the famous Looking at Things technique of Kim Jong Il...

The middle distance, that's the place for a politician's gaze, safe, neutral kind of a location. Old Harold was the past master, head buried in Gannex, pipe merrily emitting sparks, eyes transfixed at 150 yards, facial expression in nation building mode. They don't make 'em like that any more.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Boris, in a certain light......
Yes....deplorable such evasions.
ReplyDeleteAnd I pick up today's Telegraph to find the big political cartoon showing Cameron at the fish counter. He's just picked up a fish which, to his dismay, is inflated, spiny and bearing the features of Boris Johnson, a self-proclaimed zionist who recently commented that Netanyahu's actions were "disproportionate, ugly and tragic". Another Jew, Ed Milliband has said much the same and is also in the company of the resigned Baroness and Sir Nicholas Soames. Cameron has a deal with a Jewish lobby group (CFI), made in opposition, never to use the word "disproportionate".
ReplyDeleteAnd then I pick up the latest edition of Private Eye to find the very image on the front page!
