Mitch Mitchell, Never Knowingly Underestimated

RIP Mitch Mitchell, a great drummer and part of one of the most extraordinary bands ever formed (though their output was, to be honest, patchy and their peak didn't last long). A tribute read out on the Radio 4 news this morning declared that his contribution to the band 'could not be underestimated'. It's surprising how often this kind of mistake - which gives the opposite meaning of what's intended - occurs, and it's rarely noticed.
I have been kept awake most of the night by a particularly nasty, insidious 'cold', so I might not be inspired to post much today. Go over to Dick's place and enjoy yourselves...

  1. Can I suggest you send out for a bottle of Night Nurse - a bottle, not the capsules. Day Nurse useless, as it does not contain the vital additive alcohol. This amazing fiver's worth will not cure your condition, but will make the endurance of it almost a pleasure - and take about twice the stated dose. About four teaspoon-fulls will do it.

  2. Mitch - yes, a great loss, but a good way to go, particularly for a drummer.
Hard to imagine that driving propulsive style supporting any of the wan groups of today, but wasn't Jimi lucky to find such a player, just when he needed him? Moon is the only one from 'pop' that comes to mind - Elvin Jones or Billy Cobham a better comparison perhaps.

  3. Excellent suggestion Mahlerman - I'll add it to my already long Superdrug list. I ran out of that grand old cough medicine Parkinson's Kilkof last night. Still have whisky though, that's the main thing...

  4. Agree with you on Night Nurse, Mahlerman - as long as you don't have to get up in the morning. It is powerful ju-ju.

  6. Nige, the following is 100% guaranteed to A..cure colds or B.. send you on life's final journey with a smile on your face.

Fill a 300CL glass with 50% whiskey and 50% hot water, add 2 teaspoons of sugar, and a pinch of cinnamon, stir and leave to cool slightly. Repeat 3 times or as required. Inform next of kin.

    Enjoy.

  7. Now that's what I call a hot toddy, Malty! Bound to do the trick, esp if washed down with a generous swig of Night Nurse and a glug or two of Kilkof. If I don't post tomorrow, you'll know why. A smile on my face indeed...

  8. Malty, if you add a couple of mint leaves to that it's a typical Southern cocktail. Well, hot toddy.

I have a horrible cold, too, Nige, and it got worse when we had to bury our poor cat last night -- in a cold drizzle. But he now lies beneath a nandina tree ("sacred bamboo"), and if someone digs him up one day they'll find a metal box beside his bones that contains a photo of him in his prime and three tributes to him written by me, my husband, and our son.

Hey, Nige, do you know a French writer named Pierre Michon? I am currently reading his "Small Lives" and it's some beautiful writing here and a wonderful evocation of place...La Creuse.

  9. Personally I'm over that cold. And, after all these years, I had no idea you were a Hendrix man, Nige, I thought it was just me and I was too embarrassed to bring iy up.
