Good Cheer

In my mission to spread good cheer around the blogosphere in these dark days, I must draw your attention to the fact that today is not only International Talk Like a Pirate Day (Why are we talking like pirates? Because we aaar), but also the 139th birthday of Ben Turpin. They don't make entertainers like that these days (which is probably just as well)...

  1. Yes, and the sun is shining. Quite remarkable. Talking of piracy I've been considerably cheered by the story of "Deutschlands Dümmste Banker", the kindly, ultra-sober German bank that lent Lehman Brothers £275 million two hours before Lehman's declared bankruptcy and which is now rather taken aback to discover that it won't be seeing the money again. Good to know that this is not exclusively an Anglo-Saxon affliction, then. Prost!

  2. I suppose the closest was probably the great Marty Feldman, who obviously had far more range and talent than Turpin, who I can't recall doing anything more difficult than looking towards the camera.

  3. Perhaps tangential to the point but there is an excellent American character actor called Pruitt Taylor Vince who suffers from a condition that makes his eyes move involuntary.

  4. see, the sun is shining in england and it's raining in the caribbean! i'm forced to surf the Internet (and drink some truly exceptional pina coladas) since I can't snorkel or swim. tant pis pour moi!

Nigel, today on the Dutch side of St. Maarten I saw your restaurant: It was called "Nige Time." Looked like a popular local place -- probably no cravats or dubonnet, but lots of good cheer.

Happy day to all of y'all.....boy this coconut juice and rum goes down smooth...mmmmmm

  5. Lol, Susan, you should be swimming. Write out ten times, "I will not peak at the net while I am on holiday". Hope you're having a great time.
