Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases

There could be an upside to this swine flu business. It might finally persuade people that the ill-mannered habit of coughing and sneezing in other people's faces is also a health risk. It is of course hideously widespread in London, where the use of tissues (or even handkerchiefs, remember them?) seems to have all but died out, and those not actively engaged in coughing, sneezing, hawking, spitting, digital emunction (a phrase I picked up from Beckett) and voiding their nostrils without benefit of tissue or cloth will like as not be sniffing loudly and persistently. Surely our Gordon - the man who enjoined us a while back to clear our plates when eating - can see the chance for another wartime-style, Britain-can-take-it publicity campaign - but somehow I suspect the poor fellow is rapidly losing the will to live...

  1. Ah, Nige, I am so with you! I am disgusted by the lack of manners so many people have. Indeed, I've seen people cough/sneeze right in someone else's face and have decided it's a form of aggression. Germ warfare. Swine flu is now making itself felt hereabouts; we have our first cases. However, I doubt it's the pandemic the Centers for Disease Control have been jonesing a decade for. More like media hype and Mexican unsanitary conditions.....

  2. Yes, one can imagine Broon lying in a darkened room, whimpering and groaning as a thousand kukhris dance round his fevered brain. He was mad to take on the Gurkhas - nothing to gain and everything to lose, with rock sold support for the regiment across all of middle England. I'd prefer to have flu than an angry Gurkha with a kukhri chasing me, that's for sure.

  3. The old fashioned hankie is, apparently the most hygienic way to prevent the spread of germs, paper tissues, always jettisoned, do not.
Liability Broon has brushed aside criticism of his handling of the Gurkhas saying he is concentrating on the big issues.
Which is, when you think about it, his true place in society, selling them.

An old friend was in the battle of the Imphal plain and had under him a company of Gurkhas who would, every evening, melt away into the jungle returning at dawn with sackfulls of Japanese nappers, $2 each was the going rate. So yes Mark, not to be meddled with.
